SharePoint Deployment: On-Premise or the Cloud?


In planning for your SharePoint deployment you’ll need to consider where you’ll host your setup. Is it going to be hosted on-premise (in your local data center or server room) or in the Cloud?

As you consider whether to go for a hosted (the Cloud) or an on-premise solution or even a hybrid of the two, it’s important to first assess your company’s business needs, infrastructure and more importantly seek a keen understanding of each solution.

To get you started I wish to share with you the graphic below (sourced from Microsoft) which vividly shows the Cloud’s service models and how they contrast with each other and with on-premise hosting:


Cloud Computing Service Models are:
  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  • Software as a Service (Saas)
These service models sit on top of either of the following deployment models:
